Safety 411

Be aware of surroundings while driving

On the west side of Colorado Springs, there is a significant overpopulation of deer due to the open lands and parks. To avoid accidents, remember the following:

  • Deer are herd animals, so if you see one, know there are likely more nearby.
  • They’re most active at dawn and dusk, when it can be difficult for drivers to see.
  • Always wear your seat belt, which can reduce injuries if you do hit an animal.
  • Slow down if you see “deer crossing” road signs.
  • If you’re on a multi-lane road, travel in the center lane, if possible.
  • If you see a deer, brake firmly, but stay in your lane.  Swerving could cause you to lose control, and the animal may dart in the same direction that you swerve.
  • Honk your horn to scare away deer.

If the above plan fails, take the following steps after a collision with a deer:

  • Pull to the side of the road as soon as it is safe.
  • Turn on your hazard lights and remain in the vehicle until you are sure it is safe.
  • Call 911 to report the incident and seek medical attention if needed.
  • Stay away from the deer.
  • If active duty, call your supervisor to start a mishap report.
