Members of the Nellis First Sergeants’ Association present the Diamond Sharp award to Staff Sgt. Vanessa Wyatt, 99th Civil Engineer Squadron fire protection technician, Jan. 23, 2013, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Wyatt led the response to 54 calls, covering the full spectrum of emergencies. Her direction was paramount on command and control of a patient thrown 100ft from his motorcycle. She initiated the emergency response and provided lifesaving treatment to stop profuse bleeding. Additionally, Wyatt acted as community advocate to the Las Vegas Women's Council of Realtors by expertly conducting fire safety briefings. Wyatt was hand selected to guide the wing commander through live fire burns, showcasing Nellis/Creech Fire Emergency Services. Furthermore, she led the female "Firefighter's Combat Challenge" team, finishing 1st in the Las Vegas regional event. (U.S. Air Force Photo by Airman 1st Class Jason Couillard)

Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is one of the largest fighter bases in the world. Aircraft from Nellis operate on the Nevada Test and Training Range, which offers more than 15,000 square miles of airspace and 4,700 square miles of restricted land. More than 75 percent of all live munitions used by the Air Force for training are dropped on the Nevada Test and Training Range. From 100 feet above the ground to twice the speed of sound, Nellis conducts advanced combat training, performs operational test and evaluation, and develops tactics.
