Colonel Ronald E. Gilbert


Colonel Ronald Gilbert is the 57th Wing Vice Commander, Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada.  He is responsible for 34 squadrons at 13 installations comprising the Air Force's most diverse flying wing which operates more than 130 of the following aircraft:  A-10, F-15C/D, F-15E, F-16C/CG/CJ,  F-22A and HH-60G.  The wing also utilizes E-3, RC-135, E-8, B-1, B-2, B-52, MQ-1, MQ-9, AC-130U and MC-130P aircraft at 12 stateside bases to support the U.S. Air Force Weapons School syllabus.  Additionally, Colonel Gilbert is responsible for four groups:  the 57th Adversary Tactics Group, 57th Operations Group, 57th Maintenance Group and U.S. Air Force Weapons School.  He also oversees the 561st Joint Tactics Squadron, U.S. Air Force Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Operations School, U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron "Thunderbirds" and Red Flag-Nellis and Green Flag East and West exercises.


While deployed as an F-22A Squadron Commander leading 205 personnel from the 95th Fighter Squadron in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, his unit flew 1152 combat hours on 180 missions dropping 171 weapons on strategic Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria.  The unit earned multiple accolades for their actions including the 2015 Raytheon Trophy as the Top Fighter Squadron in the U.S. Air Force.


Colonel Gilbert attended the Air Force Academy, receiving his commission in 1998.  Over the years, he has served in positions at the Squadron, Group, and Wing levels, stateside and abroad, in both the European and Pacific theaters, including F-15C Instructor Pilot, F-22 Instructor Pilot and as a USAF Weapons School instructor.  Colonel Gilbert is a Command Pilot with more than 2,000 flying hours in the T-37, T-38, AT-38, F-15C/D and F-22A and holds two Master’s Degrees in Business and Operations Research.
