CURRICULUM

Third year
99 MDG FMR Year 3 Sports EventThe third year readies you to launch as a family physician out into the "real" Air Force.  The focus of this year shifts even more to your outpatient continuity clinic, completing your scholarly activity, and honing your procedural skills.  The year includes 12 more weeks of elective time and the opportunity for humanitarian missions to underdeveloped countries with SOUTHCOM.  More subspecialty block time is spent on Air Force Emergency Dept, FM inpatient/GI, Dermatology (2nd time)/Night Float, Sports Medicine/Orthopedics, Pediatric clinic, Procedures, Community Medicine at VMSN, Trauma Surgery, and Practice Management.  Again, you are allowed one paid CME trip during the year.  Two residents serve as chiefs for the year.

We expect graduating residents to be skilled in a wide variety of procedures, for example:

Neonatal Circumcision Graded Exercise Treadmill Testing
Vasectomy Colposcopy
Minor Dermatologic Surgery Vaginal Deliveries
Joint injection and aspiration Outpatient Gynecologic procedures

We offer independent performance credentialing in some procedures such as colonoscopy, LEEP, and c-sections which are available (but not mandatory) for all residents.

99 MDG FMR Year 3 PicnicFinally, one of our guiding principles is to encourage residents to pursue learning in their areas of passion.  Practically, this means we will support residents who wish to obtain unique expertise in "Areas of Concentration" such as Wilderness Medicine, International Travel Medicine, Flight Medicine, or other areas.  For those desiring their Flight Medicine wings prior to graduation, please read more info on the aerospace medicine primary (AMP) course.
