Nellis Airmen remembered during annual memorial dedication

LAS VEGAS --Col. Kit Lambert, 99th Security Forces Group commander, speaks during the 6th annual Defending Freedom Memorial dedication ceremony at the Red Rock National Conservation Area May 14, 2011. Hosted annually, the event honors fallen servicemembers with ties to Nevada and provides a forum for the community to express its appreciation for this sacrifice. The Defending Freedom Memorial was initially dedicated in 2005 and is comprised of seven sandstones with the engraved names of Nevada's fallen servicemen and women. This year, the names Nellis Airmen Senior Airman Michael Buras, Staff Sgt. David Smith, 1st Lt. Joel Gentz and Capt. David Wisniewski were added to the memorial. LAS VEGAS --The shadows of Nevada Congressman Joe Heck and his son, Joseph, are visible as they pay their respects at the Defending Freedom Memorial at Red Rock National Conservation Area May 14, 2011. Congressman Heck was a guest speaker at the 6th annual Defending Freedom Memorial dedication ceremony. Nellis pays respects to fallen Soldier

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.-- Airmen render salutes as a a hearse carrying U.S. Army Sgt. Ken Hermogino departs Nellis Air Force Base following a dignified transfer ceremony here May 21. Sergeant Hermogino died May 9 in Herat province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related vehicle accident. The son of a retired U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer, Sergeant Hermogino graduated from Basic High School in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to transitioning to the U.S. Army in 2009, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a medical administrator. Sergeant Hermogino was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Brett Clashman)
