7/17/2012 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The 57th Wing and United Blood Services will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 19 and 20 at the Outdoor Recreation Center.

United Blood Services provides blood and blood products to the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center, which helps active-duty service members and their families, as well as veterans during medical procedures that require blood or blood products.

The 57th WG has held three drives in 2012 and has seen an average of 54 donors, collecting an average of 62 units per drive. The 57th WG alone collected 462 units in 2011.

Other Nellis contributors to the community blood supply are: the 99th Air Base Wing, Nellis Airman Leadership School, Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center and the 57th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. In 2011, the total units collected for all of Nellis AFB's blood drives was 1,054 units.

According to United Blood Services website, a whole blood donation can be separated into its different components and used for specific treatments of cancer or other illnesses, bleeding disorders or traumatic injury. Since a single blood donation can be separated into components, a donation may help three different transfusion patients.

Appointments to donate blood can be made at www.bloodhero.com with the sponsor code Nellis. A log-in will have to be created set up the appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
