5/15/2012 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Holly Petraeus, assistant director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, will explain how service members can financially protect themselves in a May 16 visit to Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
The pair will discuss predatory lending practices, financial hardships, and general financial issues for military families.
Petraeus and Masto will dine with service members, participate in a roundtable discussion with senior leaders and hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. They will then host a town hall with service members, fielding questions and explaining the role of the CFPB in their financial lives.
"When we find out about people breaking consumer financial protection laws to harm service members, we'll help CFPB enforcement teams take action against them," said Petraeus in a recent letter to service members. "We also plan to work with the Pentagon to give military personnel and their families a really good financial education, so they can recognize a bad deal before they sign on the dotted line."
Petraeus, who is married to retired Army General and current Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus, was a military spouse for 37 years and a former Department of the Army civilian employee. Before joining the CFPB, Petraeus served six years as the director of BBB Military Line, a Council of Better Business Bureaus program providing consumer education and advocacy for service members and families.
She now partners with the Pentagon to protect the military community by financially educating service members and families, monitoring and responding to consumer complaints, and helping federal and state agencies improve consumer protection.
Masto has served as the Nevada Attorney General since January 2007. As Attorney General, she represents and defends the interests of the people of the state of Nevada and is chief legal counsel and adviser to state government and its many state agencies, boards and commissions.
