5/1/2012 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The peak PCS season begins in May and extends through August every year, with Memorial Day through Independence Day being the busiest time.
In 2011, the military experienced higher-than-normal delays with household goods pick-up and deliveries due to high demand for personal property moves and a limited number of transportation contractors. At Nellis, the PCS workload increases by almost half during the peak season.
Careful planning is vital to making a smooth move during these months. Because of this, the Nellis Personal Property team would like to offer some tips to help make your move successful.
- Start your move process as soon as you receive your PCS orders!
- Be flexible. Provide both primary and alternate move dates.
- Estimate the weight of your personal property accurately. A quick method to estimate your weight is to calculate 1,000 lbs per room. A better estimate can be made using the weight estimator at www.move.mil
- Provide e-mail addresses and phone numbers that you can access during the move.
- Obtain and keep contact information for the transportation service provider conducting the move.
- Pack, pickup, and delivery dates are usually scheduled on weekdays. You or your designated representative must be available between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Missing your move dates will result in unnecessary hardship and potential extra expenses.
- Contact your Personal Property Office immediately if the moving company doesn't initiate contact 10 days prior to the scheduled pack and pick up dates, or if the company doesn't arrive on moving day.
- Get rid of your unwanted items. This will help to avoid excess weight charges if your shipment is close to or exceeds the authorized weight allowance.
- Consider performing a Personally Procured Move (contact the Nellis Personal Property Office for more information).
If you have not PCS'd in the last three years, you will soon realize that there have been several changes in the Household Goods world. A new system, the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) has come online over the last few years. This is an internet based system that was put in place to make household goods moves easier for the customer. Here are some tips to navigate through DPS if you are unfamiliar with the system:
- Once you have your orders, visit the website www.move.mil to register for a DPS account.
- Once you receive your User ID and password, log onto DPS and go to the "Self Counseling" section.
- Navigate through the module and answer the various PCS questions.
Once you submit your information, allow 48-72 hours for the information to get to the local Personal Property Office, then bring in a copy of your PCS orders, amendments, and Power of Attorney (if applicable).
It is extremely important to keep your contact information updated in www.move.milyou're your moving company can reach you. You can find the "It's Your Move", "Shipping Your Privately Owned Vehicle" and "Storing Your POV" pamphlets on the www.move.mil website or at your Nellis Personal Property Office. These pamphlets clearly explain personal property and POV shipments and are a great source for additional moving tips to help you prepare.
Set up your DPS account and visit the Personal Property Office as soon as you receive your PCS orders. Don't wait or you will risk not getting your preferred dates. Remember, the Personal Property Office needs at least 21 days to get your shipment booked prior to your requested pickup date, and will need even more time during the peak season. The Nellis Personal Property Office is located on the second floor of Building 11 (directly above Finance). Helpful Tips to make your move a success to and from Las Vegas
1. PORT CALLS: Members PCSing do not need orders to make airline reservations. Please contact your assigned outbound counselor to request/submit your port call. Passenger travel can make airline reservations 90 days out.
2. HOUSEHOLD GOODS (HHG) DELIVERY: Once you arrive at your new location your belongings can be unpacked and anything that was disassembled at origin will be reassembled for you upon request. Your dishes will be placed in the cupboards, but they will not be organized to a specific manner/liking. Your electronics will not be connected nor will your pictures be hung on the walls.
3. SUMMER MOVE: Do not ship any flammable or combustible items (hairspray, canned deodorants, etc). Make sure you stay hydrated during the loading/unloading of your property. Plan accordingly, allow flexibility in your schedule for any delays (summer moves are the busiest times for TMOs). Do not ship any perishable items.
4. Personally Procured Move (PPM): If you elect to perform a Personally Procured Move (formerly known as do-it-yourself , or DITY), your reimbursement will be 95% of the cost that it would have cost the government to move your property. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition to drive across the Nevada/Arizona terrain. Ensure all of your fluids levels are topped off and engine belts are in a serviceable condition.
