Mission
The 547th Intelligence Squadron (IS) is the "Center of Excellence" for adversary tactics analysis for the United States Air Force.

The squadron compiles, writes and edits the Air Force Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (AFTTP) 3-1.Threat Guide, "Threat Reference Guide and Countertactics." It also analyzes, refines and disseminates intelligence products on adversary air, air defense, electronic warfare, cyber and space tactics and weapons employment for customers throughout the Department of Defense.

The squadron is a charter member of the Emerging Threat Tactics Team (ET3) and hosts the Special Tactics Analysis Team (STAT); sponsors and hosts the Nellis Air Tactics Conference (NATC); Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS) Forum, and Nellis Cyber Threat Conference (NCTC); provides intelligence for Air Combat Command's test and evaluation programs; and provides intelligence to the 57th Adversary Tactics Group (ATG), 57th Wing, 99th Air Base Wing and United States Air Force Warfare Center (USAFWC). In addition, the 547th IS provides all-source intelligence for Air Combat Command's premier live-fly RED FLAG exercises.

It also integrates national intelligence assets into USAFWC missions; operates and maintains the only Air Combat Command (ACC) Threat Training Facility (TTF) for the Air Force; operates automated intelligence systems to provide space -derived intelligence to the Nellis community; and operates the USAFWC Special Security Office.

The squadron serves as the Network Operations Center (NOC) which maintains, administers, and configures the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS) and associated Video Teleconference (VTC) capability for all validated customers with a need to process SCI material for both Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases and any off base extensions. The squadron operates the JWICS help desk on a 24-hour a day, 7 days-a- week basis.

The commander of the 547th Squadron defines the threat to air combat operations, to include foreign tactics and employment philosophies, and monitors and evaluates threat simulator employment on electronic ranges as directed by ACC. Duties also include providing current intelligence to Nellis Air Force Base staff agencies; and managing the ACC Threat Training Facility for familiarization training using adversary threat equipment. In addition, the commander manages the SSO for sensitive compartmented information support to Nellis personnel; and maintains direct liaison with the US Air Forces in Europe, Pacific Air Forces, and national-level intelligence agencies to obtain technical and tactical intelligence data.

The squadron accomplishes this mission through six flights:
· The Intelligence Analysis Flight (INA) provides analysis of adversarial air-to-air, electronic warfare, surface-to-air, space and cyber threat systems, tactics and employment philosophies of foreign military forces for customers throughout the Department of Defense (DoD) and National Intelligence Community. The flight serves as the office of primary responsibility for AFTTP 3-1.Threat Guide, and hosts NATC, IADS Forum, NACT, STAT and ET3 conferences. The flight also provides current intelligence to the USAFWC, 57th ATG 57th Wing, 99th Air Base Wing senior staff and the base Force Protection/Threat Working Group.

· The Intelligence Operations Flight (INO) is responsible for the planning, development and execution of RED FLAG-Nellis exercises and provides assistance to RED FLAG-Alaska. GREEN FLAG, and MAPLE FLAG exercises. The flight creates exercise scenarios, trains and evaluates unit-level intelligence skills and processes of all US and Allied exercise participants.

· The Resource Management Flight (INR) is responsible for originating, developing, reviewing/revising squadron requirements, programs, budget and long-range plans. The flight also provides maintenance support, procures threat systems, schedules tours for the Threat Training Facility and ensures squadron members are ready to deploy when tasked.

· The Intelligence Training Flight (INW) is responsible for the formal professional development of intelligence personnel assigned to the 547 IS. The flight manages the On-the-Job training (OJT), formal training course, and the Intelligence staff training program.
· The Systems Flight (INY) maintains communications connectivity of the squadron's unclassified, collateral, and Nellis and Creech AFB's JWICS Special Compartmented Information (SCI) local area networks, ensuring access to SCI communications circuits and databases on a 24/7/365 basis.

· The Special Security Office (SSO) is responsible to the USAFWC Senior Intelligence Officer as principle advisor on Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security and communications matters, and supports squadron collateral security functions as 547th Unit Security Manager.

Background
The 547th Intelligence Squadron traces its roots to both the 547th Night Fighter "Black Widows" Squadron which provided air suppression support during the rescue of 511 American and Allied prisoners at Cabanatuan, Philippines during WWII, and to the 4513th Tactical Training Group (TTG), which consolidated separate intelligence organizations supporting the Tactical Fighter Weapons Center, Red Flag, the Directorate of Tests, and other flying units in 1975. In 1981, the 4513 TTG was renamed the 4513th Adversary Threat Training Group (ATTG).

By the mid-1980s, the 4513 ATTG was well on its way to establishing a reputation of excellence for threat analysis. The group's men and women made significant contributions toward the study of adversary threats through participation in the development of the Multi-Command Manual 3-1, Volume 2, Threat Reference Guide and Countertactics, as key contributors to regional tactics analysis teams, and as host to the annual Nellis Tactics Conferences.

As part of the overall USAF reorganization, the 4513 ATTG was redesignated the 547th Adversary Threat Squadron in 1994 and later that year, it became the 547th Intelligence Squadron.
