A one-of-a-kind Air Force resource that provides educational tools to military health providers celebrates its 20th birthday on July 27.

Founded by the Air Force Surgeon General’s office in 1996, the purpose of the Center of Excellence for Medical Multimedia is to create innovative educational programs and products for patients and healthcare providers.

Lt. Col. Shelley Jay, the CEMM chief, said the organization’s leadership has spent the past two decades living up to the vision of Col. Kent Murphy, the first chief. “He was confident that educating patients would empower them to be more involved in their own healthcare.”

She said this anniversary means, “the work we are doing is having a positive impact on Air Force personnel and all beneficiaries.”

The work they do involves using the most current multimedia technology to produce educational programs, suicide prevention training, pre-deployment training, and resiliency training. These programs cover all sorts of mediums, including DVDs, mobile apps, and websites.

Jay said many of their programs bridge educational and training gaps in the Air Force Medical Service.  “We tailor our training platforms, using the latest multimedia technologies, to meet the specific needs of the intended audience,” said Jay.

The CEMM continues to evolve as media evolves, and as new technology emerges they will create new programs to engage their audience.

“I think that our ability to constantly improve and expand our products is definitely one of the most exciting things,” Jay said. “I truly believe that the CEMM is and will continue to be a vital AF mission asset over the years to come.”

In the future, Jay wants to establish even greater partnerships with the other military services so they can produce, “cost-effective, evidence-based educational programs and tools that will benefit all [Department of Defense] beneficiaries.”

While the CEMM Library contains links to all of their online tools, websites and apps, Airmen can also find their two apps, “CEMM Virtual Medical Center” and “My Pregnancy A to Z Journal,” on the Apple App store and Google Play store. You can also visit CEMM.org and Wingman Online for more information.
