Outdoor Recreation provides services for summer fun

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. --  Whether you want to do some camping or go boating this summer, The 99th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation has what you need to have an exciting adventure. They are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Outdoor Recreation provides many services around the base to include equipment rental, small engine repair for lawn mowers and vacuums, classroom rental, United Parcel Service center, horse stables, Desert Eagle Recreation Vehicle Park spot rental, RV storage, community center, and the gun club.

These services are available to Department of Defense ID cardholders on active duty, reserve, guard, and retired, as well as their dependents.

"[Outdoor activities people can do in Nevada include] hiking, biking, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving," said Mike Clegg, 99th Force Support Squadron chief of outdoor recreation. "Just about anything outdoors you can do anywhere else, you can do here."

Items outdoor recreation rents out are:

- Sporting equipment
- Boats and boating equipment
- Camping Gear
- Household and lawn tools
- Party and outdoor event equipment
- Travel and Utility Trailers
- Winter ski and snowboard tune-ups

Maybe you don't want to plan an excursion of your own. Outdoor recreation organizes many trips for military members, retirees and their dependents to attend at a low cost.

"We offer about 60 trips a year from San Diego to the Grand Canyon," said Clegg. "[Our] prices are at least half the price of off base services. We have varying discounts from downtown. The military is very popular right now and if we say we want to bring 15 to 20 people who are active and retired military members they would give us an additional discount."

Outdoor Recreation also has a Single Airman Initiative Program where they organize free to low cost trips and events for single enlisted members and officers.

"We like to think we keep [the airman] mentally and physically fit," said Clegg. "If you are mentally and physically fit doing all the fun [trips] then you can better cope with your job a little better."

Outdoor recreation believes the services they provide are important for the morale and welfare of the airmen on base.

"The feedback [we receive] has been really good from active duty to civilian customers," said Carlos Del Valle, 99th FSS outdoor recreation trip program director. "The feedback has been a five out of five."

Upcoming trips include scuba diving, a Lake Mead moonlight kayaking and camping trip, a Zion National Park hiking and camping trip and a Black Canyon kayak adventure.

Outdoor Recreation will be doing drawings on June 2 for a Black Canyon kayak trip for you and 11 of your friends, nine Pahrump winery trips, five Richard Petty Driving Experiences, 10 dune buggy rides, and 50 gift cards valued at $25 each.

Participants can register by either liking the Force Support Squadron on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/nellisforcesupport, which will count as one entry, or by filling out an entry form (maximum of one per daily visit) at Outdoor Recreation located in building 439. Entries may be submitted during month of May for chances to win.
